Morning. Following on from yesterday and my Mystic Meg predictions that pendants are going to be BIG (literally!) in 2016, let’s talk pendants shall we? I am more than a little obsessed with them as they are one of those tools that you can use to highlight, illuminate, create zones, and most of all add instant glamour. Lighting as we all know is one of the most important aspects of decorating; it’s a game changer. Pendants will add major impact dangling down over kitchen islands, dining tables, even nightstand and coffee tables, everywhere in fact. Think of them as necklaces for your home!
One of my pet peeves is kitchen lighting – I think they’re so neglected when it comes to cool lighting. Any kitchen with an island looks amazing with a central pendant or row of them because it draws attention to the whole area. If you fancy giving your kitchen a quick update then do nothing more than adding a pendant, you will be amazed at how transformative it is. I take it one step further and go down the chandelier route but I also love industrial lighting in kitchens those big fat metal pendants – anything that creates a distinct look if you like! So I’ve got a beaded chandelier over my kitchen island and a Lazzaro over my dining table.
Same goes for dining tables stick a pendant above – the bigger the better – and that area immediately becomes uber glam. Dimmers are fundamental because you can set the mood, but you don’t just have to use them in the centre of rooms. Over a console in the corner works equally as well as you can highlight and illuminate whatever is on it. Over a conversational area as well the possibilities are endless.
But don’t just limit yourself to the obvious spots like tables and islands. A little corner nook can instantly become that much cooler and cosier by stringing a pendant light down to reading height. Or try it out as an alternative to bedside lights – particularly great if you’re strapped for space and need more room on your nightstand! Lastly tall ceilings are basically begging for a bit of pendant drama – any tall rooms, or even better staircases… take inspiration from Heal’s for the ultimate in statement lighting.
Talking of Heal’s we are shortly putting up a lot more flower classes as we had waitlists last year! Our first one kicks off on the 13th Feb to coincide with Valentine’s. If you fancy learning how to create the coolest bouquet around (for yourself, or for someone else if you’re feeling generous!), then here’s all the details.
