The natural light is dimming and the days are getting shorter.  Our winter decor ideas will inspire you to hunker down and create your cosy retreat as we nestle inside and embrace the season.

In order for us to want to hang out indoors we have to make it as tantalising, cosy and intriguing as we possibly can.

What Makes a House Cosy in Winter?

One of the secrets to a cosy winter home is layering.  Layer up your lighting, cushions, throws and colours to create ambience and warmth.  Layers that appeal to all of the senses like table lamps that emit soothing pockets of glow to the warmth and feel of snuggly sheepskin throws and slubby woollen cushions.

Winter is the perfect time for armchair gardening – dreaming, plotting, planning what you can plant for the spring.

Abigail's 5 Favourite Winter Home Decor Tips

1. Use soft furnishings and rugs to create a cosy cocooning vibe.

1. Use soft furnishings and rugs to create a cosy cocooning vibe.

One of the easiest ways to reflect the season is to change up your soft furnishings.  Choose cushions in tantalising textures and warmer hues to create those all important layers.  Change up your rugs to soft and shaggy or layer them up to make it just a little squidgier underfoot.

2. Add extra pockets of lighting

Changing up your lighting can be super transformative to how your room looks and feels.  It’s all about creating that magical atmosphere of little glowing pools of light dotted around the room.  Adding in a few extra table lamps will enliven dark corners and create a cosy glow that makes you feel like you wanter to linger longer.  If plug points are an issue, our collection of LEDs are perfect for dotting around the room or adding to bookshelves and coffee tables.

Create cosy pockets of glow.

3. Fill your rooms with seasonal scents

Scent can transform the feeling of your space and change the mood and vibe as well as having quite a dynamic effect on our emotional state.  There's something so beautiful about the flicker of candlelight when the natural light has dimmed. Use woody and smoky scents in the cooler months to create a heady ambience that transports you to a cosy cabin.

4. Bring the outdoors indoors with faux botanicals

Botanicals are a perfect way to reflect the outside landscape throughout every season.  Once the summer blooms have faded, the hedgerows come to life with flowing grasses and structural seed heads in a wintery palette of browns and blacks with a hint of green.    Add colour and texture with mossy branches and long feathery grasses that connect us to nature and create a nurtured ambience that makes us want to linger longer.

Trace the arc of the seasons with our everlasting blooms,

branches, grasses and seed heads.

5. Create a kitchen retreat.

Abi is a keen cook and loves nothing better than to hang out in her kitchen and conjure up some culinary delights from her latest fave recipe book.  Preparing something wholesome and comforting is the perfect way to spend chilly days.  AA recommends to decorate your kitchen like other rooms in your home and add in table lamps, art and furniture, it not only makes it a chic hang out but helps to integrate it with the rooms that lead from it.
