As you guys know I am obsessed with lighting. For me it can transform a room from feeling unfriendly and sterile to cosy and somewhere you want to linger longer. Your home should be a place you want to relax, rejuvenate and is so important when decorating a space.
For me, lighting is an integral part to making a room feel homely and cosy. Without even realising it, the quality of light in a home can have a huge effect on people in many different ways. Dingy and drab environments can make you feel sluggish and down, where if something is designed well it can have a positive affect improving moods and increased productivity.
With a few clever lighting choices, you can get a year-round feel good factor in your home, helping you to feel focused and happy. So, here are some helpful hints to help you change this….
MORE NATURAL LIGHT
Before you begin to think about lighting, consider the natural lighting you have. Natural light has many health benefits and can help your intake of vitamin B and D, both of which are important in the regulation of many of our body’s functions. It is also can help to highlight colours and bring a room together.
I use mirrors all over my pad. It can make a space feel larger by reflecting surfaces and light and maximise your natural light. The bigger the better! Remember you can also play with scale so don;t always going for a small or tall mirror, go big and bold to mis things up!
I always mix a range of lighting to stop my pad from feeling flat and stuffy. I use ambient lighting to create soft lighting that illuminates large spaces. Task is great to brighten a space and is focused in one position. Task is great for the kitchen to hang over work surfcaces but ambient is more for setting a mood over a dining table.
Dimmer switches are an ABSOLUTE MUST. They allow you to choose the amount of light you want in a room. Yes you can create a dark atmosphere, but unbeknownst to many, these clever little switches also allow you to crank up the light in a room also.
