Design on a dime

Posted on May 20 2011

Is it possible? Well sort of especially when it comes to art. I am a huge fan as I am sure you all know of embellishing walls with art be that sketches, oils, prints and plain old words.  I am also a huge fan of adding art the DIY way. Take for example this image below of my pad (please excuse the fact its a good number of years old and the room now is so multi layered with stuff you can’t even move). I digress the painting on the wall isn’t actually a painting its the back of an old metal sign I just happened to fall in love with the pattern of the rust when I saw it at a flea market. I think I paid £40 for the sign and whenever clients come to the house they always ask who the artist is!

Of course many other fab materials also look pretty darn cool on walls take for example concrete tiles.

Figure out a pattern this is a super simple grid pattern and attach to the wall – genius hey.

This is a little more boho and have seen it done in many stores around the world – empty frames on walls. Its particularly effective if you cluster a big old group of various sizes and then for a tongue in cheek twist add the odd painting.

Painting  part of a wall with blackboard paint and then scrawling and writing on it is super cheap and far more interesting than an empty wall.

Also sweet especially in a home office or above a dressing table, a big old frame the ornateness adds the wow factor by the way and then a collection of post cards, prints, messages and so forth.

Or you could blow up an image that you love to super size proportions and simply float on the wall – I should add that many times in my humble opinion frame less when going large adds to the drama.

Finally but probably the most ingenious is to do what Rita Konig did in her old NY apartment – stick a series of polaroid images of friends, family and stuff above the mantle piece and hey presto instant art installation.
