We all procrastinate, me included. Boring tasks or parts of the biz that I hate doing often get put on the back burner until it’s too late – all of which slows down your growth. Here are four ways to help fight the procrastination temptation:
Time block your day
Like me you’re probably multi tasking working on a zillion things at a given time. The bad point is that multi asking often fuels procrastination because it means you can delay less than enjoyable tasks to the back. If you time block and divide tasks into time frames you can set much more realistic deadlines. If you want to know more about this check out the Pomodoro Technique, it’s v handy.
Set well defined goals
We all need goals not just lists and if you set concrete deadlines your chances of procrastination are eradicated. Specific measurable goals means you’re more than likely to hit those targets.
The George Washington method
I hadn’t heard of this until recently – but this method involves picking an arbitrary point in your day and setting this point as noon. The idea being you push forward in segments from there and only focus on the hour you’re currently in. It’s basically another way of organising your time. What is super interesting is that this strategy is the one that the White House cleaning stuff uses today!
Keep yourself in line
The best thing about being your own boss is that no one tells you what to do. No one breathes down your neck, critiques you, praises you pushes you forwards – its also the worse thing. It’s hard to always stay upbeat and motivated – there is no daily progress call other than with yourself. I’ve kind of gotten used to it but it’s not easy and takes a lot of motivation to keep spirits high and stay focused. These days with so many different irons in the fire its not a problem but in the early days I really struggled.
Everyone owning or thinking of starting their own business needs to maximise productivity and stay focused so although we might all procrastinate in order to have a super successful biz, we need to do it less. Hopefully from now on we all will right?
