QUICK FIXES FOR LAZY DECORATORS

This month we’re focusing on details – all the small stuff that turns rooms around. There’ll be tons on that throughout the month. For today’s post I wanted to concentrate on the really little changes. Although we all like a mega project every now and again (top of my hit list at the mo are my bedroom and bathroom) no one really has the energy to constantly be overhauling your pad top to bottom. Sometimes it’s the simplest little switches that get the best results! You know, the stuff that you can implement on a lazy Sunday afternoon – quick, satisfying, high impact and low cost. Good no?

PLAY WITH SCALE

Flick through many magazines and you’ll see quite a lot of unforgettable unremarkable spaces. Why? Answer is quite simply everything is more or less the same size. To knock your interior out of the park ramp up the scale. I’m not talking about going out and buying the most expensive supersized chandelier on the planet. Even one oversized item will immediately elevate your whole space.

Check out the giant vessel above – add a branch or large faux botanical and wham! Instant statement piece. Or try putting a side lamp on top of a heap of books to boost it’s height, take your largest house plant off the floor and plop it on to a console, or hang a large print over a small table. The results are always chic and dramatic.

QUICK FIXES FOR LAZY DECORATORS - create a gallery wall

CREATE A GALLERY WALL

Spend an afternoon clustering your favourite artwork in one area, preferably that forgotten zone in the hallway or above the stairs. Gallery walls are perfect adding impact. And don't think you have to spend a fortune either! The best thing about gallery walls is that the whole is definitely greater than the sum of it's parts, and anything goes really. Think kid’s artwork, magazine tears, prints, eBay or flea market finds. More ideas for art on the cheap here!

SHOP YOUR HOME

Rearrange what you’ve already got. Move the sofa (I know, it's scary!) or the table, or the console around. I’ve used a small dining table as a bedside, put a console in front of the window and used it as a faux planting table – basically shuffling stuff around. It always gives you a fresh perspective.

QUICK FIXES FOR LAZY DECORATORS - Add greenery

CHUCK A THROW AT IT

Enliven dining chairs, sofas, benches and even outdoor furniture and headboards with a throw. Personally I use sheepskins everywhere and anywhere. It adds additional layers and cosies the place up at the same time. Great for disguising pieces of furniture that have seen better days too. Win win I say!

STYLE YOUR COFFEE TABLE

This is the quickest pick-me-up when you're stuck in a decorating fug. Just show your coffee table some love. Stack it up with glossy mags or gorgeous books, a sculptural accent, a fragrant candle, ideally a plant and zhoosh it’s transformed! It really is that simple. Get the full lowdown on styling up your tables here.

QUICK FIXES FOR LAZY DECORATORS - Embellish empty corners

EMBELLISH EMPTY CORNERS

There are no empty corners in my house. There’s always a table or chair, a stack of books on a trolley, a floor lamp or artwork so it doesn’t feel blank. Even at each turn of the stairs you'll find something to look at - giant faux cacti, a teeny side table underneath some faux taxidermy, a giant pot plant or African sculpture. You get the gist! If you want a room to feel mesmerising, fill in all those little nooks, even if it's a simple case of rearranging the furniture.
