20 Years of Decorating Differently

From humble beginnings in the tiniest of stores in Islington to a global brand that strives to create luxurious yet affordable pieces that tell a story and take interiors to a whole other level.

Your home should be a personal expression of who you are and represent the way you want to live. Reflecting your personal connection to the world.

Abi x

The famous Abigail Ahern Animal Lamps sold around the world and made regular appearances on TV and film as well as celebrity homes.
AA's first store on Upper Street, Islington. Now in Essex Road, Islington the store remains a destination for those looking for a huge dollop of interior inspiration.

From Humble Beginnings

Abi launched her namesake brand in 2003 after living in America for a number of years. From working as an interior designer stateside she got into the world of styling in the UK and found a real gap in the market when it came to sourcing beautiful things for shoots. So she opened the teeny tiniest of stores in Islington and things took off from there. Abi then designed her first range of lighting after picking up her dog from doggie school. Her pooch was trundling out with friends and Abi had a lightbulb moment (pardon the pun) and thought her little group of doggie chums would make the cutest lamps. She was right, they sold around the world with regular appearances on TV and films and even some of the biggest names in Hollywood bought them! a huge pinch me moment for Abi.

What came after the famous dog lamps?

Then came books (Abi has recently released her 5th), TV appearances, a bigger store (still in her favourite, Islington, London), and concessions in famous department stores such as Selfridges, Heals, and Shanghai.

Abigail Ahern's Famous Faux Botanicals

With her sister Gem on board and her previous floristry experience with some of the biggest names in the industry like McQueens and Wild at Heart they rocked the world of faux flowers. Re-inventing the previously 'naff' reputation of artificial flowers, they designed and launched their own range of realistic blousy garden blooms and foraged foliage, naturalistic grasses and structural seed pods.  Fast forward to today and that naff reputation has gone, AA had a major part in making these fabulous fauxs cool, arranging them in a wild, loose and naturalistic way to adorn our homes in botanical abundance. AA has reinvented faux botanicals into luxe collectables with hand painted stems which trace the rhythms of the season, and even receiving international attention, with the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow sharing her support.

Over to the Dark Side

Abi was once described by the press and various magazines as the 'Queen of the Dark', helping to cement her reputation as an interiors rule breaker, encouraging us to decorate differently.  At the height of minimalism and when everyone was painting their homes stark white, Abi experimented with sludgy, dark, bottom of the lake hues and fell for their intoxicating and cocooning allure immediately. Days before Elle Decoration were due to shoot her home for their magazine, Abi decided to paint her whole house out in the darkest of hues, mainly downpipe by Farrow and Ball, not only did sales of this colour soar but Abi unknowingly created a new vibe for interiors and attracted a whole new audience for those of us who wanted something a little different, dramatic and intriguing.  Encouraging us to colour drench and paint everything out in the same hue, ceilings, skirting boards, window frames, the result was truly magical. Today AA has a range of paints with over 30 colours in the most beautiful palette of earthy and seductive hues.

AA - Where are we Now?

Today AA is an aspirational lifestyle brand with a thriving e-commerce site and a global wholesale business. Striving to create luxurious yet affordable pieces in their increasing catalogue of own label designs that sit at at the cross roads of modernity and tradition and that tell a story.

Abi's love for interiors and encouragement to decorate your home around the mood and vibe you want to create is as strong now as it was 20 years ago.  She's created a passionate community across her socials for which she is immensely proud.

So here's to decorating differently and the next 20 years!

I always design each and every space in my own house around a mood or emotion. I continually ask myself how I want to feel in each room. Your decorating choices totally affect your emotions and how you feel in a space, the colour on your walls can make you feel relaxed or if you don’t get it quite right, anxious.
