Abi's Bedroom Makeover
Big changes, small changes. I’m about to embark on a really big change, my master bedroom is getting a makeover. It's scary but scary is good, scary means we are doing something out of our comfort zone and different which is how you get to create magical interiors.
Changing Things Up
All Change!
I know January can feel a little daunting and the pressure to refresh and change things up can be a little overwhelming for some, but for me, I happen to love that feeling of change that comes with a new year, a new season, whatever.
I have been wanting to change up my master bedroom for such a long time and decided to take the plunge. As you know I'm pretty interiors obsessed and for me that feeling you get as soon as you enter a room is my main driver.
For my bedroom I wanted a modern rustic vibe, a snuggly cabin in the woods feel (cabins are another obsession of mine), so I had to think how I could take my space up a notch.
Read on for my journey in taking my bedroom to a super snuggly retreat that I just don't want to leave.
My Mood Board
Why Are Mood Boards Essential?
Brief to myself - a cabin tucked away in the Cotswolds that also feels super luxe like one of the coolest hotels.
Before you jump all in, curating a mood board is a useful tool in helping you to create a space you will never want to leave. Especially if you're planning a full room makeover, you'll want to ensure that all of your colours harmonise or contrast depending on the look you are going for.
I use a digital mood board and spend time gathering inspirational images that I'm immediately drawn to and depicts elements of what I want to include in my room.
First up, pick your colour scheme for the walls and floor treatments (I've got some samples from our paint launching Feb here, soo excited to show you the collection). These areas take up the largest amount of real estate and will dictate the mood. To give your pad a professional edge the secret is to embrace contrast and friction. Let your mood board fizzle with contradiction. At the same time you’ll want to bring your space together with some repeated threads, could be colour, materiality or pattern. There you have it, my secrets to creating a foundational scheme and the same tips that applied for my bedroom makeover.
Changing a colour in a room can bring so much joy and also so much pain if you get it wrong. As there is so much wall space in a room, it makes committing to a colour really tough. My biggest tip is to trust your gut. Look around your home and see what colours appeal and then lift upon it. For me, I gravitate towards earthy hues, both deep and dark and soft and cocooning. I even start styling in amongst the chaos. Not recommended! A colour change is all about taking a leap of faith, pushing boundaries and not getting too attached when things don't work out as planned.
Look Up
A Ceiling With Cabin Vibes
The most game-changing thing has been the addition of *Envello cladding by Millboard. I’ve used their board & batten composite cladding in limed oak. It’s incredibly realistic with its luxurious grain and it has transformed the bedroom into the snuggliest cabin. This is so different for me, as normally I would paint the ceiling out so it goes away and becomes the least visible element in the room, except now it’s the MOST visible element in the room. The texture pairs so well with my wooden wall and goes with the rustic modern aesthetic I’m championing. It’s made this space so cosy and so much more intimate. I’ve echoed the ceiling colour in the accessories and an earthy softly baked hue on the walls.
*N.B. For all Millboard product installations, it is essential to verify that the product is appropriate for the intended application and complies with the specific project regulations.
Finishing Touches
The Fun Bit
The curtains are from my Hillary's Blinds collection, they're Sulby Doe fabric on the front crafted from boucle with Chimney fabric on the reverse which is game changing and means no more white panels from the outside, I love it. I’ve opened up the fireplace by taking out the fake wall, added some art, super textural table lamps and rustic vases, some left unfilled as I love their form and some filled with new season botanicals to soften any harsh lines. The rug is a super shaggy one from our previous collection.
Lots of things I've also re-purposed from other rooms in the house. I love doing that, it means you can really change the look and feel of your space without having to necessarily get lots of new stuff, I'm also in a position whereby I get samples for things that we are planning to put in to production, so I place them around the house to give me a good idea if they'll work as part of our own AA interiors collection.

Before & Afters
When you're in the middle of your makeover and having a wobbly moment and wondering if it will all come together, it's hard to think past that and see the end result, then, at the end of the project when your room has been styled to perfection you forget all of those wobbly moments (hopefully). I definitely had a few moments where I couldn't picture the end result and I did wobble halfway through before all the dressing of the space begun. I was seriously worried as I wasn’t seeing what I saw in my mind. Moral of the story don’t quit, walk away, come back, continue to dream, keep the faith and know that you and only you has the power to make things change and happen. What if it all goes right?
