SUSSING OUT YOUR STYLE

As anyone who’s come to my Design Schools will know, I kickstart the day with a quiz to help everyone work out their style. It’s a bit of fun but it’s also super important. Why you ask? Well because once you’ve nailed your own style you’ll be able to put your finger on why you gravitate towards certain rooms (or colours or art or rugs or whatever…), and start to inject this style in your home. Whenever you really drill down into it you’ll see patterns and similarities pop up – whether across your pinterest boards, favourite instagram pics or magazine pages you’ve been hoarding.

Don’t get me wrong, it takes years to really figure out your style, but a rapid-fire quiz is a great place to start. It’s all about having the confidence to know what you like, stick to your guns and go with your gut. That way you won’t be swayed by fad trends that come and go, and you won’t find yourself fretting over whether this or that vase properly “goes” in your room or not. The questions are: is it your style? Do you love it? (And to be totally honest those two are just versions of the same thing!) If you love it, it’s your style, and it’ll find a perfect spot in your home.

So for this quiz I want you to just go completely with your gut reaction – don’t overthink it or spend too long on any question. Ready? Set… go!

All done? Was it what you expected, or were you surprised by the results? The first time I did my own quiz I got “classic”, which honestly even I wasn’t expecting. But we all know that I’m constantly struggling to sum up my own style (oh the irony she says, here I am telling you how important it is) – I definitely know what I love, but to pin it down in a few words is so tricky. The thing is that each of these can be interpreted in different ways. So you can easily be classic, but love to shake up the bones of a classic building with amazing colour patterns or a touch of glam (like this pad in Paris). Or maybe you’re boho at heart, but sometimes drift into the feistier, rock & roll style of decorating. It’s all good because the more styles you introduce the more intriguing your space will be.

So now you’ve figured out your style I’ll be properly drilling down into each of them on the blog over the next few weeks. I thought maybe I’d show you some of the coolest homes in that style, tips on how to pull it off, and also favourite pieces to get the look. Oh and I’ve also got a whole chapter dedicated to this in Decorating with Style, so in the meantime you can always peruse that for more ideas. Let me know what you got in the comments!
