Balancing Act.

.

Every room in your home needs balance and harmony. If all of your furniture is at one level and there's nothing to intrigue the eye it can all read as rather boring and feel a little 'off'. Whether it's a dining table, coffee table or the mighty side table, tables are the heart and soul of a room. They can add height, symmetry, asymmetry and act as a stage for some show stopping interior pieces, think amazing lamp or some beautiful botanicals.

Add Height.

.

To counterbalance all those long low lines of sofas and coffee tables etc you need verticals. Use a side table either or both ends of the sofa (not necessarily matching ones) to house your lamps (also not necessarily matching), the differing heights will add instant interest. Mix up proportion and scale.

One of AA's top tips is to look at your interior like a cityscape. You ideally need have a combination of different heights to create an interesting “skyline” in your space. In this image you can see how by clever use of side tables, Abi has created her own skyline, making the space look cohesive and intriguing.

Make a Statement.

Use a cleverly placed side table to showcase your unique style. A large vase of botanicals, fabulous sculpture, plants or memoirs from your travels can all be displayed to up the design anti to a redundant corner or sofa side. You can change it up as frequently as you wish or just move the table! Another plus of the side table is that it's not such a large piece of furniture that takes a huge amount of effort to relocate.

Bathing Beauty

We tend to neglect the bathroom a little when it comes to styling, but practicality can be beautiful too. Create a piece of spa like luxury by placing a table bath side for housing your essentials as well as a scented candle and maybe even a glass of something bubbly. Or for creating another layer of height maybe to house a faux plant for a punch of sumptuous greenery.
