3 Things Every Great Room Has (And Most Homes are Missing)

If you walk into a room and don't feel relaxed, happy, excited, and joyful then what is the point? However, sometimes rooms can feel a little off and it's hard to pinpoint why. In my 24 years in the business I've found that the most memorable homes are those that feel lived in, a little imperfect and rough around the edges and don't take themselves too seriously, but they also have 3 things that are essential for making your home feel amazing.

❝Feel positive in curating an environment that aligns with your individual taste and have confidence with your choices, especially when they resonate with the heart. As you experiment with colours, textures, and patterns, you'll be amazed at how just a few small changes will have on the overall atmosphere of your pad❞

1. A Sense of Mood

The best rooms make you feel something. They aren’t just pretty – they’re atmospheric, cocooning and dramatic.

How To: Stand back from your space and take note of the colours, lighting and textures. Do you need to add in some warmer tones, extra lamps or cosy softs? A room needs all three of these to set the mood, once you have nailed these, think about the scent of your space. The trick is to have an underlying scent so that as you transition from room to room or walk through the door everything smells amazing.

2. Layers

A room should unfold slowly. Layering is one of the most important components in the decorating puzzle, If carried out well, the result will totally create a cool laid back space you’ll never want to leave.

How To: Adding in texture, lighting, accessories, botanicals and soft furnishings slows the eye down and creates magic. You can make any room into one that awakens all the senses and truly show stopping through storytelling by adding layers.

3. Contrast

Not everything should blend and match as contrast creates energy.

How To: Think light against dark, rough against smooth, old against new. Mixing elements and materials engages both visual and tactile senses giving a room a layered cosy feel. Pair smooth with rough or shiny with matt, add warmth through natural textures, ground the space with earthy warm hues and always mix in a bit of pattern. Super simple but so impactful!
