5 Decorating Mistakes Preventing Your Pad From Looking Amazing

Sometimes it's hard to know why our space can feel a little off. Discover some of the most common decorating mistakes and the simple shifts that can make your home look infinitely more stylish, inviting and characterful.

❝When you decorate differently and break boundaries, it becomes addictive. It’s easy to play it safe, but the trouble with taking the safe route is that it doesn’t allow you to inject personality into your home.❞

1. A Lack of Visual Highs & Lows

When everything sits at the same level, whether it's furniture, accessories or plants, the eye has nowhere to land and a space can feel surprisingly flat. Much like in nature, where trees, shrubs, hedges and plants coexist, interiors feel more relaxed and visually engaging when there's a mix of heights. The result is a space that feels curated, balanced and full of character rather than static and one-dimensional.

2. Playing it Too Safe

The most memorable interiors take risks. They embrace deeper colours, unexpected contrasts, oversized pieces and objects that spark emotion. The smallest tweaks that take you out of your comfort zone can create the biggest impact, a darker paint colour, a large-scale piece of art, a sculptural lamp or an abundance of foliage. Add some in and watch the magic happen.

3. Fear of Dark Colours

One of the biggest mistakes is sticking to pale neutrals everywhere. While light shades can work beautifully, an all-beige scheme often lacks depth and personality and feels a little... meh!

Instead, embrace richer tones and layer colour throughout a space. Earthy greens, warm browns and moody hues instantly create atmosphere and make a room feel more considered. You don't have to go all out and colour drench your whole room. Start by adding deeper tones and inky hues in your furniture and accessories, you'll be amazed at the impact colour will have on your space.

4. Pushing Your Furniture Against The Walls

Many people assume this makes a room feel bigger. Often it does the opposite. Pulling furniture away from the perimeter, even slightly, creates a more thoughtful layout and encourages conversation and flow. If you can walk in a straight line through your space, it can read as too functional and in turn rather sterile and boring. Just pulling your sofa away from the wall and maybe even adding a console behind it will make the space feel more curated and also provides another styling opportunity for adding in some botanicals, art, sculpture and accesories.

5. Leaving Surfaces Bare

Don't miss out on the opportunity to add some character and style to your space. Coffee tables, consoles or shelves need styling to feel complete. Layer books, vessels, sculptural objects and botanicals in varying heights. The goal isn't clutter it's creating curated moments that draw the eye and exude visual narrative.
