Carla: After working in fashion, I became a beauty editor and it was during this time that I realised just how many synthetic substances and toxins were in so many commercial beauty products. I began writing about healthier, natural alternatives made from plants and organic foods and that’s how my first book ‘Feeding Your Skin’ came about—a collection of recipes for homemade skincare and beauty products. When my daughter began experiencing skin issues, this evolved into experimenting with fermenting wholefoods based on my research into the gut-skin connection—how what we eat directly affects our skin. 16 years ago, the first iteration of Glow® was made in my Bondi kitchen.

Carla: Unfortunately, The Beauty Chef products aren’t currently available in the UK. But there are so many amazing products I also love. I love Emma Lewisham’s products—especially her Illuminating Oil Cleanser. I also love Neal’s Yard products. Nécessaire The Body Cream is also brilliant, and The Nue Co Forest Lungs is one of my go-to fragrances.

“you need to choose the collagen type that will most benefit your health and wellness goals”
Carla: One thing that’s important to look for is ‘hydrolysed’ collagen peptides. Hydrolysed collagen is broken down into smaller molecules which makes it easier for the body to absorb. There are also different types of collagen—type I, type II and type III—which are linked to different benefits. For example, some collagen types stimulate collagen production specifically for joint or cartilage health, while others stimulate collagen production in the skin. Therefore, you need to choose the collagen type that will most benefit your health and wellness goals.

Carla: A common misconception is that to have a healthy gut, you must eliminate certain food groups. While some people do benefit from sticking to a low FODMAP, it’s not a necessary step for fostering good gut health. Education is a key part of The Beauty Chef—I’m so passionate about empowering people through knowledge about the gut-skin connection and how the gut microbiome not only supports glowing skin but our overall wellbeing. By sharing blogs, recipes and wellness tips, our community can make informed decisions and support their gut health in ways that suit their needs and lifestyle.

Carla: I always say to start with what you put on your plate. Diet is super important—it’s the single most important factor to influence your gut health. Choose real wholefoods, lean proteins, leafy greens, and healthy fats. Fermented foods are incredible for gut health, so incorporating things like kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir, kombucha and miso into your diet is great, too.
