I’m a big fan of this look and all things rustic, ski lodge or cabin inspired! Mountain modern feels such a perfect meld of casual with luxury.

What is Mountain Modern?

Mountain Modern is a design style that overlaps rustic and modern themes, marrying warm and weathered with cool, clean and contemporary. Pared back rustic elements mixed with modern decor for fresh spaces that incorporate natural materials like wood, linen, stone and ceramics, neutral colour palettes and a huge dollop of added texture with an abundance of soft furnishings.

Earthy Colour Palette.

Traditionally contrasting the cool clean lines of the mountain backdrop, a stylish cabin retreat is perfectly punctuated with neutral and soft earthy colours that pair so well with natural and rustic materials. Black is a grounding colour and really brings in that organic vibe, add in these dark accents to excite the eye and bring the decor alive.

Mix up the Materials.

This look requires an abundance of contrasting textures. Ceramic vases, wooden side tables, metal candleholders and glass lamps sit in harmony together providing the colour palette is pared back.  Soften any harsh lines with a smattering of sheepskins, chunky knit throws, shaggy rugs and cushions piled high. Accent chairs and seating are also an excellent way of ramping up the texture, think sheepskin armchairs and sofas made from the softest faux fur.

Layer up the Lighting.

Create pockets of glow to further warm up the space.  A natural wood backdrop won't bounce the light but it will create intriguing shapes and shadows. Tall floor lamps and table lamps with natural fabric or raffia shades add a sculptural beauty and look just as stunning when they're switched off.  Wireless lamps offer a flexible option to highlight a dark corner, add a pop of luminescence to kitchen worktops or gently illuminate your dining table or coffee table.  Overhead lighting can be a little harsh but soft linen fabric pendants and beaded chandeliers takes the visual interest up and can act as an extra focal point.

AA Tip:  A room should have more than one focal point to create visual intrigue.

How to Accessorise your Home for a Mountain Modern feel.

Let artwork and unique accessories add depth to your home. Sculpture, vases, decorative trays and baskets are an easy way to add a heap of personality as well as some more textural contrasts. Cluster candleholders and scented candles to create ambience when the sun goes down.  Baskets piled with wood give a natural warming feel, even if they are just for decorative purposes only.  Artwork is a very personal representation of our personalities, but the mountain modern look leans to a more contemporary edge and just one or two thoughtfully placed pieces will suit the vibe rather than a maximalist gallery wall.

AA Tip:  Use a decorative tray to anchor small accessories and create small vignettes of character laden style to your side tables and coffee tables.
